UNPAID carers in Barnsley gathered at a new “Carers’ Café” to share their experiences and challenges looking after family members and friends.

The initiative has been launched by Deangate Care Home in partnership with Barnsley Carers Service to offer a safe and supportive environment for those who dedicate their time looking after loved ones.

The inaugural event was attended by those caring for individuals in their homes as well as the families and friends of residents at Deangate.

Several families attended to share their personal stories and offer support to each other, with many expressing their appreciation of having a space to discuss the complexities of caring for loved ones.

Among them was Ian Dickinson, 91, who came along with his daughter Clare and great-granddaughter, five-month-old Hattie. The youngster quickly became the star of the event, bringing smiles to everyone in the room.

Avril Pritchard, a representative from Barnsley Carers Service was also on hand to discuss the various support services available for unpaid carers in the community.

Avril said: “We’re thrilled to be part of this initiative and to provide families with that extra layer of support when they need it most.”

One participant, Susan Tattershall, said: “I wish there had been something like this before. It has helped me get so many of my questions answered that I didn’t even know where to ask.”

Caroline Humphrey and Catherine Lunn, both of whom have mothers residing at Deangate Care Home, had their first in-depth chat during the café.

Caroline said: “It was so welcoming, and I felt at ease to talk about my experiences. I’m looking forward to the next one.”

Another attendee, Rita Wood said: “What a lovely setup. It’s so nice to see families supporting each other.”

Among the discussions was that of moving a loved one into a care home and the emotional challenges that accompany the transition. The new Carers Café provides guidance and support for those considering their options for their relative or friend’s ongoing care.

The success of the launch event ensures the service will continue to run monthly, offering a valuable resource to unpaid carers and their families.

Rachael Addy, activities coordinator at Deangate Care Home, was among those who organised the Carers Café.

She said: “We hope this will encourage people to connect, share their experiences, and see Deangate as a welcoming, open house. Whether families need respite care or are considering future care options, we want them to know we are here for them.

“Alongside Barnsley Care Services, we hope this initiative will foster a stronger sense of community and encourage open conversations around the realities of caregiving.”

The next Carers Café will take place at 2-3pm on 15th October 2024 at Deangate Care Home, Towngate, Mapplewell, Barnsley, S75 6AT. For further information, contact the care home by calling 01226 383441 or email deangate@hillcare.net.
