ALMOST two thousand pounds was raised for Dementia UK by a group of keen Huddersfield hikers after a sponsored beach walk in Northumberland.
Friends, families and staff from Aden View Care Home, in Primrose Hill, Huddersfield, gathered at Bamburgh on the North East coast for the 13-mile round-trip to Beadnell and back.
With donations still pouring in, so far the sponsored walk has raised over £1,860 for the specialist dementia charity – smashing their original target of £250.
The group of 21 walkers was led by Hazel MacKay, the wife of Aden View resident Bert MacKay, who lives with dementia.
Hazel said: “Dementia UK is an incredible cause that means so much to so many people. Every step of the sponsored walk was in support of families affected by dementia and the amazing work carried out by the charity and their admiral nurses.
“Everyone enjoyed the walk, especially the beach elements. Our youngest walker was 16 and our oldest in their 80s and we had the pleasure of two four legged friends, Violet and Walter, who had a great time in and out of the sea.
“The weather was kind to us – a bit chilly setting off but it soon got warm. Our return to Bamburgh was in sunshine. Everyone agreed it was a great community feel, walking and chatting and making new friends.
“Thank you to everyone for your donations. They really will make a huge difference to those living with dementia and their loved ones.
“The fundraiser was so successful we plan to do it all again next year in a different location.”
Sharon Broadbent, kitchen assistant at Aden View Care Home, was one of those who took part in the sponsored walk. She said: “The whole idea was brilliant. Amazing weekend and met some lovely people.”
Kimberley McKay, home manager, added: “What an incredible achievement by an amazing team of people. Walking 13 miles from Bamburgh to Beadnell via Seahouses while raising almost two thousand pounds is something to be incredibly proud of.
“Dementia has touched so many lives, and it’s inspiring to see our families, staff and friends all come together to raise both funds and awareness for such an important cause.
“Congratulations to everyone who took part, and thank you for making such a huge difference. Can I also send a huge thank you to Hazel who made this all happen – you’re one of a kind.”
